Big Adventure 3- Week 12

Sunday, Feb. 20

We’ve been staying at a few more county parks on this trip. They normally have smaller campgrounds, have hook-ups and are cheap. This one, north of Lake Charles, LA, gave us an open park to walk the dogs and our first views of fallen trees left by category 4 Hurricane Ida in 2021.

Our Harvest Host membership took us to Myrtles Plantation, just north of Baton Rouge, LA. Built in 1796, it now gives tours through the restored house, is a bed and breakfast, has a general store, a fine dining restaurant and is considered one of America’s most haunted homes. It was a great place to walk the dogs around the grounds and interact with the ducks in the pond.

On the northern edge of Lake Pontchartrain, north of New Orleans, we stayed at Fontainebleau State Park. Huge moss-laced oak trees still exist from the former sugar plantation. We walked the many trails and open fields under the beautiful trees.

I went out on my bike and flew my drone all afternoon. I hope you like the video.

We overnighted in a forest of long-leaf pines just north of Mobile, AL. Before we got there, we bought catfish and hushpuppies from Lartigue Seafood Market. Carol’s paternal grandmother, Granny Rose, was related to Bubba Lartigue, a shrimp boat captain out of Mobile. He and his brother started fish markets in the area, so Carol and Lois wanted a taste of the family. After arriving at our host’s house, we joined them as they fed the animals of their hobby farm. It was fun to watch the donkey, Shetland pony, goats, chickens, roosters and ducks.

Needing to experience more animals, we drove to a lavender farm in the panhandle of Florida. Chickens and roosters came from everywhere to greet us. There were so many that the dogs weren’t sure what to do, so they ended up ignoring them. Our host provided us with a grill and charcoal, so I grilled our Lartigue catfish while Carol air-fried the hushpuppies. While outside, Romeo, the rooster, came running past me and jumped on the back of a hot-looking chicken. I was a little traumatized and glad we were eating fish tonight.

We received notice this morning that we can’t get into our condo until April. We are all very sad. Our favorite place to be is at the beach and it’s not going to happen this spring. We made plans to visit a few parks in Georgia, then stop in Myrtle Beach to pick up my car and some personal items that we left there. When you live in a RV for months, the closeness starts to take its toll. I’m to a point that I can’t stand being around myself.

We made a reservation at a county park west of Tallahassee. We were very excited to get a premiere site right on the lake. When we arrived, there were two tents and a car sitting on our site. I’ll spare you all the details, but this is what happens when you mess with the Hamiltons. It was pretty funny when the people came back, after dark, and found a RV sitting on the site where their car and tents once were. I’m going to talk to David Copperfield about using this illusion in his act.
