Big Adventure 2- Week 8
We are meeting Chad and Lais in Daytona Beach on February 18th which is 1900 miles away. We prefer to drive about 200 miles a day, so we can be there with a day to spare.
Normally, when we are driving cross-country, the adventures take a break.
Sunday, Feb. 9
Our first stop in the big, wide state of Texas is the Fort Stockton Walmart. It’s a well-used overnight stay for RVers traveling on I-10. We pulled into a rest area to relax for a quick break. Up ahead was a beast that we had never seen before. Someone had dumped some feed on the pavement and he was chowing down. Carol thought he was very cute.
Soon after we got back on the road, a light rain started. Driving an RV in the rain causes the driver to slow down and grip the steering wheel tighter. It also tires the driver out.
We arrived at the Fort Stockton Walmart in time for supper, then relaxed in the Ham, listening to the rain on the roof.
Monday, Feb. 10
Today was going to be another day of driving in the rain. Tired of trucks flying past us at 80 mph, we got off of I-10 and took some less traveled roads. It was certainly more relaxing but also slower. We got to South Llano SP during a break in the weather, so the girls got a nice hike in the cool, drizzling afternoon. The weather prediction was for heavy rain overnight which made Carol uneasy. The river that we were on had a history of flash flooding. I quickly fell asleep to the rain on the roof, while Carol lay awake all night worrying.
Tuesday, Feb. 11
You guessed it. We get to spend another day in the rain. We liked Palmetto SP earlier on our trip out west, so we were going to spend the night there again. The weather again was taking a break when we got here and allowed us to take a hike on a wet, muddy trail in the woods. An umbrella was needed when I took the dogs out before bed.
Wednesday, Feb. 12
Since we are driving a Minnie Winnie, we had to stay in Winnie, TX for the night. A county fairground would be our stay for the night. Walking around mud-puddles with the dogs was our only entertainment here until the rain started making the area around us one big puddle. We had to move to higher ground.
Thursday, Feb. 13
I had an Uncle Dick and Uncle Dick’s City Park was calling out to us for a visit. Drizzle with falling temperatures and wind made our outdoor activities very cold. It just didn’t seem right to be wearing winter clothes in southern Mississippi.
Friday, Feb. 14
Sunshine! We had been traveling in the rain for five straight days and it was so good to see the sun. It’s going to be a shorter drive today, so we’ll enjoy the sunny outdoors. We tried hiking on a nature trail, but with all of the rain it was flooded and we had to turn around. We still enjoyed walking on the paved roads in the sun. We also got to see our first flowers of the year.
Saturday, Feb. 15
We’re in sunny Florida! We had booked a free night at the property of a fellow RVer though our RV membership, Boondockers Welcome. This host had the unusual number of ten sites in his large field.
It was a wet, boring week, but in a few days we’ll be on the east coast, visiting with Chad and Lais.
