Big Adventure 3 - Week 7

In years past, we started thinking about traveling east to our condo in Myrtle Beach about this time. Unfortunately, our entire building has been closed due to major construction. Hopefully, this week, we might get good news and that way. Watching the terrible weather on the east coast, the southwest, right now, is a good place to be. We’ve decided to keep moving around but stay a little longer in each campground.

Monday, Jan 17

Back to Gilbert Ray Campground, just outside of Tucson, AZ. We’re going to be there for six days and enjoy the warm weather and beautiful scenery. After stopping for lunch and supplies, we got to the campground in time for supper and another spectacular sunset.  I climbed on top of the Ham and enjoyed every minute of the light show, while Carol and Lois “oohed and aahed” from inside of the Ham. We went back to our supper that was now cold. We’re really going to have to change our suppertime, this has happened three times this week. We took the dogs for a short walk after supper – a really short walk! A pack of coyotes started loudly howling just a short distance from our campsite and Carol, again, showed me how fast she can run back to the Ham. A little while longer, a full wolf moon came up over the mountains. What an exciting evening!

Tuesday, Jan. 18

We went for a morning walk with the dogs before it started raining. There was only a 7 percent chance of rain all day and we got 100 percent of that 7. We spent the entire day in the Ham doing electronic-device stuff. A good sunset delayed another supper.

A typical morning

I needed a workout, and a bike/hike is a great way to do it. My legs were still feeling tired from the Loop, so I decided on a shorter trail that took me up to the base of three mountains. It’s amazing how much greener the desert gets after rain.

Thursday, Jan. 20

A day of relaxing, reading and sitting in the sun. You see RVs of every different type, size and color.

Friday, Jan. 21

I mentioned to Carol this morning about a trail that was fairly close by that had petroglyphs. She decided that’s where I was to go hiking today. Two and a half miles up a mountain road and I was at the trailhead. The only thing that keeps you pedaling up a mountain is that you know the trip down is fun. The trail was a dry riverbed through a shallow canyon. Hiking up a fairly level sand and gravel riverbed made the afternoon relaxing. My instructions from Carol were to take a picture of every petroglyph. Job completed, I wandered around some other trails, found an old stone building, stacked some rocks and enjoyed the bike ride back.

Saturday, Jan.22

A cooler, cloudy day kept us indoors doing electronic-device activities – we’re resting up for the next campground. We visited Usery Park in Phoenix a few years ago and loved it. This time we’re going to stay longer so we can enjoy it more.
