Big Adventure 3- Week 1

Friday, Nov. 12

Big Adventure 3 starts today! We’re first headed to Myrtle Beach to drop off our car. It’s nice to have a car there when returning in the spring. Since we like to only drive 3 or 4 hours a day, we will be spending the night at a fairgrounds in West Virginia. Tomorrow night we’ll be at a former tobacco farm.

We pulled into the fairgrounds about dark. As we drove around, it was obvious that we were the only ones there. We hooked up to the electricity and settled in for the night.

Saturday, Nov. 13

Early this morning, we heard noise from outside. When I opened the shade, there were about 30 pickup trucks lined up, pulling horse trailers. I took Christy out for a quick walk. When we walked passed a group of farmers, I asked them what was going on this morning. They had all brought their horses to have them vaccinated. Since we were on the subject, I asked them if the people in this county were vaccinated for Covid. They all answered in unison, “Hell no!”

We drove another 4 hours to an old abandoned tobacco farm. The former drying barn showed us the history of this abandoned farm.

Sunday, Nov. 14

It felt good again to be back in Myrtle Beach, even though it was only going to be for two days.

Tuesday, Nov. 16

Petersburg Campground in Appling GA. was going to be our first C.O.E. campground. Most C.O.E. parks are lakes made from downstream dams. Knowing that our site was on a peninsula at the edge of the water, we were excited to get to our destination. Our site was everything that we hoped for. Massive, towering trees, great views of the lake and plenty of privacy from other campers. We were going to enjoy our three-day visit.

Wednesday, Nov. 17

We took a morning dog walk around the campground. We were quick to agree that this was one of the nicest campgrounds that we’d been to. In the afternoon, we decided it was time for Christy to take her first kayak voyage in our inflatable kayak. Not knowing how she would react to floating in the water, we were surprised that she calmly laid down in the kayak after climbing aboard. I pushed off from the shore and started paddling. Mamma Carol proudly waved to Christy from the shore and took picture after picture. Our first voyage was a total success!

Carol and I decided to take a bike ride further out into the park. Things were going well until there was an explosion from my front tire. Walking back to the Ham, pushing your bike, was not my idea of a fun afternoon. The afternoon did get a little better when I went flying with my drone.

Thursday, Nov. 18

Another morning walk and then lunch. Trying to decide what the afternoon activity would be, Christy decided for us – we found her sitting in the kayak beside the Ham. She seemed even more relaxed today, so I paddled further out into the lake. Christy and I are already looking forward to our next voyage.

We all sat outside to watch the sunset with a glass of wine. Later, when we walked around the Ham, we were treated to the moon rising. This was definitely a great stay!

Friday, Nov. 19

Wanting to try out other C.O.E. parks, we left for Shaefer Heard Campground in West Point, GA. The sites were jammed together and everyone seemed to have a barking dog. We did get to see a nice sunset.

Saturday, Nov. 20

Close by was Gunter Hill Park in Montgomery, AL. Since we got here early, we got to explore the park for most of the day.  Plenty of places to see, a pretty lake and big campsites. We liked it here and decided to return someday.
